Exploring Montreal
Montreal was inhabited by the indigenous St. Lawrence Iroquoians until it fell under French rule in 1642. Home to more National Historic Sites of Canada than any other city – including the Notre Dame Basilica, a historic 2km promenade along the Old Port and the Château Ramezay museum – history buffs have plenty to explore. Its Art Deco structures and Underground City are remarkable architectural trophies, sealing Montreal’s UNESCO City of Design award in 2006. Drive up to the three distinctive peaks of Mount Royal – from which the capital derives its name – for sweeping views across the city.
A popular summer destination, Montreal’s temperatures approach 30°C in August. But don’t let the sub-zero temperatures and snowfall put you off visiting in winter. The Underground City is a pioneering subterranean network of interconnected shops, restaurants, subway stations and hotels used by nearly half a million people every day.
Sporty types can cheer an ice hockey match or join crowds of spectators for the Canadian Grand Prix in June. Meanwhile, music lovers can enjoy one of the hundreds of festivals Montreal hosts each year. The Montreal International Jazz Festival is the largest in the world, and its Just For Laughs comedy festival is an increasingly popular annual event.
Beyond Montreal
Bordered by the imposing Saint Lawrence Seaway and the Rivière des Prairies, a chain of impressive bridges and highways connects Montreal to Canada’s capital Ottawa in the west. Head due south from the city and you’ll reach the forested landscapes of Vermont, where Canada meets the USA.
Quebec City is a scenic two-hour drive away and offers ample opportunity to explore even more of Canada’s historic wonders. Its narrow-paved, bistro-lined Quartier Petit Champlain is one of the oldest neighbourhoods in Canada and is a hub of interesting boutiques and lively restaurants.
Winter sports enthusiasts should head to the wild slopes of the Laurentian Mountains – one of the oldest ranges in the world. Its scenic Mont Tremblant ski resort is popular year-round. As well as attracting skiers and thrill-seekers, the region’s verdant hills and charming villages are a favourite among hikers in the warmer months.
With further attractions to explore, including the spectacular Montmorency Falls Park and safari reserve Parc Omega, hire a car with Avis in Montreal to truly make the most of your time in eastern Canada.
