The third largest municipality in Italy after Rome and Milan, and home to crumbling Grecian and Roman relics, soulful Naples attracts near to 400,000 visitors each year. Its warren of winding streets hosts a lively mixture of pizzeria and historic palazzi and it is an ideal launchpad for accessing the spectacular Neapolitan Riviera and the infamous city of Pompeii.
We offer flexible, one-way options, so you can collect your hire car from Naples and drop it off at a different destination at the end of your journey. Hiring a car is by far the most enjoyable way to weave around this dramatic slice of Campania.

Your journey starts here
One of Europe’s oldest cities, explore Naples and beyond with Avis. Purr past glamorous hotels and rococo churches and negotiate its historic centre teeming with shrines and market stalls.
Park up to peruse the National Archaeological Museum, which houses the most impressive Roman finds from Pompeii. Another site well worth your time lies underneath the Cathedral of Naples: the catacombs of San Gennaro, dating back to 200 AD.
Head to upmarket Chiaia for its sleek shops and meander west towards the port of Mergellina. Drive from here along gorgeous Posillipo, a road that sweeps up the headland separating the bays of Naples and Pozzuoli. Gaze across to Mount Vesuvius’ misty peak.
Remember, you don’t have to drive full-circle: make the most of one way car hire across Miami and beyond.
Beyond Naples
Slumbering Mount Vesuvius looms over the Bay of Naples and – owing to the volcano’s mass eruption in 79 AD – the nearby city of Pompeii houses one of the most remarkable collections of Roman ruins in the world. Drive here in just half an hour from the city, curling around the sleeping giant’s rocky foothills. The archaeological area of Herculaneum, sprawled in Vesuvius’ shadow, is another tragic site eternally preserved by the devastating explosion.
Further afield, the compelling Neapolitan Riviera awaits. Striking out into the Tyrrhenian Sea, the Sorrento peninsula is roughly an hour from Naples. En route, you’ll twist through tranquil countryside carpeted in vineyards and citrus groves. Once here, culinary enthusiasts can indulge in the fruits of an authentic Italian cookery class.
Blessed with glimmering vistas and peppered with quaint villages such as Sant'Agnello, Positano and Maloro, the Amalfi coast is a sprawling World Heritage Site. Hire a car with Avis in Naples to discover as much of it as possible for an unforgettable trip.
Not to be missed in Naples
At the end of 1500s the news of the possible visit of King Philip III in the city of Naples created quite a stir. In fact, the capital of the Viceregno had no place to host the most powerful man in the world. After countless changes, the viceroy Don Fernando ordered the construction of a residence for the distinguished guest. The Palazzo Reale was commissioned to Domenico Fontana in 1600, who delivered it after only two years, even if not completely finished. Too bad, however, that the capricious King Philip III changed his mind without warning: he decided not to visit the city of Naples after all. Should you be better organised than the King you can visit the Royal Apartment, the Royal Chapel, the gardens and the court theater.
The veiled Christ in the Chapel of San Severo is one of the most fascinating and mysterious works that can be seen in the city. It is said that the veil of marble on the body of Christ, is actually a veil in fabric, transformed into rock thanks to a special liquid invented by the sinister Prince of San Severo, an illustrious alchemist. Many, however, argue that the surprising effect is all the result of the talent of Giuseppe Sanmartino, the sculptor who created the veiled Christ. The discovery of a secret room and of some macabre works, visible in the Chapel of San Severo, have contributed to giving the Prince and the veiled Christ an aura of mystery.
