Plan your trip to Corfu
Corfu, the second largest of the Ionian islands, sits off the west coast of the Greek mainland. The island’s history is intertwined with the history of Greece, from the beginnings of Greek mythology through Venetian, French and British rule which preceded the 19th-century unification with Greece. The main hub, Corfu Town, sits on the the broad part of the Corfu peninsula. The old town is a delight and sits beside a modern marina. Many cafes and restaurants lie within its walls … making it the perfect spot to soak up the local culture and enjoy a Greek coffee.
The town is flanked by two imposing Venetian fortresses, built to hold back the Ottoman empire. Its French arcade is a favoured location to browse the local boutiques and pick up souvenirs.
Further afield scenic beaches are dotted along the coast with a mountainous backdrop peaking at Mount Pantokrator. The island has something to offer most travellers, from the party resort of Kavos to the picturesque coves of Paleokastritsa.
For a small island Corfu has a wealth of museums and palaces to visit. The Palace of St Michael and St George, a former residence of the British high commissioner, now houses the world-class Museum of Asian Art. Visit the Achilleion Palace to see the fresco of Achilles, to whom the palace was dedicated when built by Empress Elisabeth of Austria. The garden is home to many statues of mythological heroes.
Road trips around Corfu
Outside of Corfu town and the main beach resorts there are a wealth of sites to explore; your own transport is a must, so pick up your Avis hire car from a choice of island rental stations and discover the charm and history of Corfu.Mount Pantokrator
The islands highest peak at 906 metres, Mount Pantokrator is an hour’s drive north of Corfu Town, via Palaiokastritsas road. The mountain slopes spill down into the Ionian Sea and the winding road then corkscrews up to the mountain summit where the Pantokrator Monastery sits. Spectacular views dominate, stretching as far as the Greek mainland and the Albanian mountains on a clear day.
Avlaki
Following the same route to Mount Pantokrator, via the Palaiokastritsas road, Avlaki sits an hour’s drive north of Corfu Town on the north-eastern tip of the island. The area is in stark contrast to much of Corfu’s beach resorts, with very little development rewarding those looking to get away from it all. A handful of tavernas sit along the large beach where you can watch windsurfers, or take part if you are feeling adventurous.
Palaiokastritsa
Find Palaiokastritsa on Corfu’s west coast, a 40-minute drive from Corfu Town on the Palaiokastritsas road. The west coast is noted for its beaches and scenery and this popular resort drops down through the valley to a series of picturesque coves, with numerous, quiet beaches to explore. Complete your visit with a trip to the Theotokou Monastery. Founded in the 13th century, the current building is home to a wonderful garden.
